Cairns - the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
Cairns although a fair size doesn't feel overly crowded or too touristy. It has some good nightlife with the legendary Woolshed being a popular place to go.
Most of the hostels are pretty competitive and most offer free meals with accomodation.
Our trip up on the Oz Experience bus ended here and we celebrated by getting off our faces. The bloke below in the pink top was our bus driver!
Also check out the Peter Lik Photography Gallery for some amazing but pricey shots of Asutralia.
You can't come to the East coast and miss out on Cairns

Great value if you stay in the big dorm, which is actually not too bad.
I was here for almost 3 weeks and met some awesome people. The place is nice as it is a short walk along the esplanade to the main centre - good to build up your appetite when you go out and also to clear your head when your on the way home!
The place was well laid out with a nice big swimming pool in the centre making it very easy to meet people.
The guy below with the coke cans is Jordan who decided to try and drink 40 cans. He made it up to 18, throwing up heavily along the way.

Things To Do
Dive / Snorkel The Great Barrier Reef - $60/$99
You can't come to Australia without doing this. There are loads of tour operators etc all geared up to take you out the the Barrier Reef. We went with Noahs Ark which is aimed at backpackers and was the cheapest option. For a whole day trip it cost $60 for snorkelling or $99 including 2 dives.
It was an all round excellent day.
Cape Tribulation - $99
You can book a trip to go up to Cape Tribulation / Port Douglas & Daintree River.
Cape Tribulation has nice rainforests, and nice beaches etc.
Port Douglas is a rich trendy town with nice restaurants, exclusive bars etc.
Daintree River you can do a cruise spotting crocodilles in the wild - we saw 2, which was probably the highlight of the day.
Overall a good full day, well worth doing.
Kuranda Markets - $FREE
The Kuranda Markets are great for buying Arts and Crafts and just generally having a look around.
There is a butterfly zoo which is nice enough.
There is also a rainforest walk which you can do.
You can catch the bus direct from Cairns
Go-Karting - $20
Absolute quality. $20 for 15 mins, but the cars are fast and the track fairly long. Gets very very hot out there especially with the competition.
Quad Biking - $110
Sophie and I went for a days quad biking which was awesome. Definately recommended. Excellent operation run by a guy called Ralph.

Hot Air Ballooning
Sophie and I did this after a pretty heavy night out till about 2am. We had to get up at 4am for the hot air ballooning still pretty pissed!
The whole thing was quite a nice experience, but would have been better if it was at reasonable time of the day. Champagne was included which was nice.

Waterfalls - Free
A few of us hired a car one day ane drove from Cairns down towards Innisfail and stopped to check out some of the waterfall etc. Worth doing if you have a spare day.
